As the medicinal cannabis industry grows, so does the need for professionals trained to work in this highly regulated and technical field. In response, the Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre (IPP)—a higher education institution in Portugal—is launching an innovative new course designed to prepare students for careers in cannabis cultivation and processing.

A European First in Cannabis Education

IPP, located in the Alentejo region of Portugal, is making headlines with a new training program at its Escola Superior de Biociências de Elvas. The course is one of the first in Europe focused specifically on the science and technology behind cultivating Cannabis sativa for medicinal use.

This program blends classroom learning with practical, hands-on training, giving students a deep understanding of the cannabis production process—from seed to sale. It’s a bold step that places IPP at the forefront of educational innovation in Europe’s cannabis space.

Learning by Doing, Backed by Industry Experts

What sets this program apart is its strong focus on real-world experience. IPP has partnered with MHI Cultivo Medicinal S.A., a leading medicinal cannabis company in Portugal. Thanks to this collaboration, students will have access to professional-grade facilities and advanced cultivation technologies.

The course combines scientific theory with practical skills, allowing students to train directly in greenhouse environments and production labs. They’ll learn to use tools for monitoring climate, automating systems, and optimizing plant health—skills in high demand across the global cannabis industry.

Training for Every Stage of Cannabis Production

The curriculum covers everything students need to know about cultivating cannabis in different environments, whether that’s outdoors, indoors, or in greenhouses. They’ll also study the latest tools in automation and environmental controls, helping them grow high-quality crops consistently and efficiently.

Students will be trained in international best practices, including Good Agricultural and Collection Practices (GACP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)—key standards required for producing medical-grade cannabis.

Facilities Designed for the Future of Cannabis

Thanks to the support of MHI Cultivo Medicinal S.A., students will work in greenhouses outfitted with dedicated areas for plant propagation, research, and processing. These high-tech spaces offer a real-world look at how modern cannabis operations are run, providing students with valuable industry exposure.

Creating Career Opportunities in a Growing Industry

This course aims to prepare students for real careers in Portugal and across the global medicinal cannabis sector. With the knowledge and hands-on experience gained through the program, graduates will be well-equipped to join companies involved in cultivation, processing, and distribution.

Whether they stay in Portugal or look for international opportunities, students will be ready to bring efficiency, compliance, and innovation to the businesses they join.

IPP’s Vision for the Future

By launching this program, IPP is committed to preparing students for emerging industries. This initiative supports local economic growth and the broader global push toward a well-trained workforce in the cannabis sector.

Portugal’s role in Europe’s cannabis landscape is expanding, and with educational programs like this one, the country is positioning itself as a leader—not only in cultivation but in cannabis education and workforce development as well.
